Eiffel Tower Entrances | How to Access the Eiffel Tower Stairs & Lift?

So now that Eiffel finally made out of your bucket list and you have planned everything for your trip to see the Iron Lady in all her glory, one last step remains– actually entering the tower. And if you thought that it’s a no-brainer because well, how hard can it be to access a monument– after all, you have the tickets– let us break it down for you. There are East, West and South pillars, all marked with different coloured flags. Confused?

Don’t worry, as in this guide you will get to know all about the Eiffel entrances and exactly where to head when you reach the landmark on the day. Happy navigating!

The Eiffel Tower entrances, explained

The East, West, and South Pillars all have entrances. Choosing the right one might seem confusing, but it's actually quite simple.

South entrance

If you’re a health enthusiast, then the South entrance is for you as here you can take the stairs for a more active experience. Marked with a blue flag, this is the Entrance 1 of the Eiffel Tower.

You can buy tickets to climb the stairs to the 2nd floor, or to climb the stairs to the 2nd floor and then take the elevator to the top, as the summit is accessible only via an elevator. With 674 steps in total, the hike is worth the hype as you can get up close and personal with the Iron Lady during the climb.

🚏 How to reach: You can easily reach it by taking the Metro to Bir-Hakeim or Trocadero stations. If you prefer buses, lines 72, 82, and 30 will take you to the Eiffel Tower stop, while lines 86 and 69 will drop you off at Champ de Mars. From there, it's a short walk to the entrance.

🕘 Entrance timings: The entrance is open from 9am to 11:45pm.

⌛ What's the wait like? If you don’t have a ticket in advance, you’ll have to wait for hours in line to purchase one, especially during peak times based on the crowd on the day of your visit. It’s best to have online reservations that even come with hosted entry to make your experience smoother.

East and West entrances

Are you looking forward to riding the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower? Then head to East and West pillars. If you've already secured your ticket, keep an eye out for the green flags. They'll guide you to the designated entrance for ticket holders.

For those who still need to purchase a ticket, follow the yellow flags. They will lead you to the ticket counters where you can buy your ticket.

🚏 How to reach: Either take Bus 42 or get off at Ecole Militaire station on Metro Line 8 to reach the entrance.

🕘 Entrance timings: The entrance is open from 9am to 11:45pm.

⌛ What’s the wait like? The East and West pillars are less crowded than the South entrance, as people tend to take the stairs rather than the elevators as it is budget-friendly. However, without advanced reservations, you might have to wait a bit before you get your chance.

Which Eiffel Tower entrance to choose?

Not sure which entrance to pick? Here’s a lowdown:

South entrance

  • Pros: You have the option to take the stairs to the second floor, which can be a more rewarding and less crowded experience than the elevator. Provides stunning views of the Trocadero Gardens and the Seine River.
  • Cons: Can be more crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. Challenging for those with kids and health issues as there’s a 674 stair climb.

East entrance

  • Pros: Generally less crowded, making it a good choice for those who want to avoid long queues. Offers direct access to elevators to the top.
  • Cons: May not offer the same scenic views as the South Entrance. Taking an elevator is a bit more expensive than the stairs.
