Top 4 reasons you should visit Hotel de la Marine on your trip to Paris
Wondering what to include in your Paris itinerary? We got one, Hotel de la Marine. Be warned! If you’re a history buff or have one in your group, you are going to geek out, and here are four reasons why:
Cauldron of French history
The hotel is steeped in history, as far back as the 18th century. It was originally the royal storage for the Crown's furniture and during the French Revolution, became the headquarters for the French Navy. Recently in 2021, after extensive restoration, it opened as a museum, showcasing its rich history and opulent interiors.
Populated by interesting rooms and whispered stories
Not just about public spaces, the hotel houses secret rooms and hidden passages that once served the French monarchy. When it was originally used by the French monarchy, there were hidden areas essential for managing royal furnishings and treasures. Connecting these rooms were narrow passages allowing for discreet movements between rooms.
Celebration of stunning architecture
A masterpiece of neoclassical architecture from the 18th century, the Hotel de la Marine was designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel. The facade, inspired by the Louvre Palace, is decorated with sculpted medallions and garlands and a distinguishing feature, the loggia. This passageway is lined with twelve Corinthian Columns, a checkerboard stone floor, and sculpted bas-reliefs.
Storehouse of exquisite art and decor
Housed within the hotel is a stunning collection of period furniture, art, and decorative objects.
Currently ongoing at the hotel is an exhibition of the Al Thani Collection which features an exceptional body of art spanning a long period from antiquity to the present day. With each room and exhibition telling a story of luxury and craftsmanship, the Hotel de la Marine is a living museum of beauty and history.

Peek into the private apartments of the Intendants
Visit the intimate spaces of the Intendants who once called Hotel de la Marine their home. It’ll feel like walking through an 18th-century laboratory, filled with furnishing, decor, and artwork, belonging to that period.
Did you know: The original sky-blue paint in the tiled antechamber was found after removing 18 layers of paint.
A walk through the loggia
For one of the most beautiful (unobstructed) views of Paris, walk through the loggia, a balcony. Built in the 18th century, this classic architectural gem features 12 Corinthian columns, sculpted nas-reliefs, and a checkerboard floor, thus reflecting its royal origins.
Did you know: The Hotel de la Marine is constructed around the imposing balcony, loggia.
Explore the grand staterooms
The grandiose staterooms are a reminder of the Navy's presence who spent 200 years within these walls. Walking through these halls, you can spot marks of the Navy such as anchors and dolphins. Adjacent to the staterooms is the famous loggia, offering one of the best and unobstructed Paris views.
Enjoy self-guided tours of the Al Thani Collection
The Al Thani Collection, one of the world's most prestigious private collections, features an extraordinary array of artworks, from Antiquity to the present. It covers cultures and civilizations and celebrates human creativity and the power of art. Did you know: Previously works from the Al Thani Collection have been presented to the public through temporary exhibitions in major international institutions, including The Met (New York), the Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London).
